Larry A. Wood
Member of the Advisory Board, Project Geologist
Since attaining a BS in Geology in 1979, Larry Wood has worked for the companies of independent oil operator Jack E. Mergele, active in oil exploration within a 100-mile radius of Abilene, Texas. His focus was on acquiring, organizing, interpreting and presenting subsurface well data in order to develop an oil prospect from an idea to a drilled test well. This included graphical and textual presentations for industry specialists and non-technical audiences. Additionally, Larry is an experienced "company man" and well-site geologist and has supervised the drilling of over one hundred vertical test and development wells. Over 30 years of experience in every stage of oil operations - from well drilling to completion and regulatory compliance - have made him a valuable asset for any oil & gas company.

From the age of six, Frank Mergele spent many hours with his father Jack, a Petroleum Engineer and Geologist, on drilling rigs examining well sample cuttings and watching over new well completions. He went on to earn a BS degree in Petroleum Engineering from Texas A&M in 1979 and worked as Head Engineer at the elite Pegasus Field for Mobil in Midland, Texas. In 1981 he accepted a position with Crown Exploration as Drilling- and Production Engineer; responsible for all phases of oil and gas production - from drilling to production. During the infancy of horizontal drilling in the Austin Chalk he became a horizontal geosteering consultant and after being involved with over 180 horizontal wells, he returned to his roots in Abilene, TX and partnered with Charter Petroleum and Probe Exploration. He is now even more involved in all phases of the business - from the inception of a geologic concept to production; including mineral owner leasing, working interest partner relations, TxRRC filings, supervision of pumpers and design and cost estimation for workovers and recompletions. Several wells he operated are in the top 5% of cumulative production performance. He also works as a consulting engineer for several other operators.
